Press Release for Oct. 8, 2010: Parents Grassroots Effort Moves Forward To Build La Casita Library at Whittier Fieldhouse

On the 24th day of the sit-in at Whittier Field house known as “La Casita”, parents’ efforts have moved forward in the struggle to build a much needed school library at Whittier.

On Wednesday, Oct 6, 2010 a city hall ordinance passed by unanimous consent that the Whittier Field House a) would not be demolished, b)the gas turned back on and c) that the Education Facilities Taskforce decide on the future of the “casita”.

On October 7, 2010 Ald. Solis finally decided to meet with a delegation of parents at the Alderman’s City Hall office and later that evening visit the larger group of parents at “La Casita”.

Today, he wrote a letter stating “I want to make it clear that I do not support CPS’s decision to demolish the field house, and I am working with the community to save this structure to build a library for Whittier School.” He also stated that he will work with the Chicago Educational Facilitates Task Force to conduct a review of the building structure.

At the same time Mr. Huberman continues to insult the parents by demanding they leave the field house without assurances of a good faith effort. His actions have been to criminalize parent engagement by intimidating parents with arrest and cutting of the gas supply.

Mr. Huberman is refusing to meet with parents, defy city council and be a obstacle for the educational attainment of our children.

We ask Mayor Daley to intercede on our behalf and order Mr. Huberman to meet with the Parents of Whittier to assure our Children have a school library.
